Kashagan Growth Projects
Key indicators
The Kashagan field is recognized as the largest oil discovery in the past four decades and stands out as one of the most complex industrial projects globally. Its development is particularly challenging due to several factors, including high levels of hydrogen sulfide, harsh environmental conditions at sea, and significant engineering, logistics, and security challenges.
Currently, the full-scale development of the Kashagan field is being implemented in stages. Phase 1 of the project is already in production, showcasing initial successes and laying the groundwork for future expansions.
Looking ahead, Phase 2 is being planned as part of three separate projects, with the most advanced studies focusing on Phase 2A and Phase 2B. These phases are strategically designed to enhance oil and condensate production levels significantly over the next decade, aiming to increase the overall output of this critical asset.
The Kashagan field’s development not only contributes significantly to Kazakhstan’s economy but also exemplifies cutting-edge technology and innovation in overcoming the unique challenges presented by such a demanding environment.
Project “Stage 2A”
The Stage 2A project aims to significantly boost oil production at the Kashagan field to approximately 500,000 barrels per day (kbbl/d) (around 63,000 tons per day). This increase will be achieved by supplying an additional 2 billion cubic meters (bcm) of sour gas per year to a third-party gas processing plant. Currently, efforts are focused on defining the project’s concept, which includes assessing the technical and operational requirements to facilitate this enhancement in production.
Project “Stage 2B”
The Stage 2B project seeks to further elevate oil production levels to about 710,000 barrels per day (kbbl/d) (approximately 89,500 tons per day). This ambitious initiative will involve the development of new sections of the Kashagan field and the construction of new facilities, along with an increased supply of sour gas amounting to 6 billion cubic meters (bcm) per year to a third-party facility. Similar to Stage 2A, work is currently underway to define the concept, ensuring that all aspects of production optimization, infrastructure development, and environmental considerations are thoroughly addressed.
Together, these projects represent a significant step forward in maximizing the potential of the Kashagan field while contributing to Kazakhstan’s energy goals. They underscore the commitment to advancing production capabilities while managing the complexities associated with operating in such a challenging environment.
